June 30, 2010

so instead of waiting for the mayapples to turn yellow and drop

i figured i’d pick some and see if they ripen on their own

i decided to number 6 of these mayapples
in the background is 4 mayapples wrapped in newspaper

June 19, 2010

went out to one of my mayapple patches and was shocked to see most of the berries  GONE

in a 10 ft x 10 ft area, i found one berry still on the plant and one berry on the ground

i have to assume that possibly wildlife got the other berries

i’ll check some of my other mayapple spots

the little guy on the left  is a ( male? ) mayapple ( 2-2.5 inches high )

males have a single stem while a female have 2 stems with the flower/berry at the V of the stems

all parts are considered poisonous

HOWEVER,  the berry may be eaten when ripe
